Introduction

Come and be enlightened by my unprofessional, poorly-made blog where I watch movies and tell you what I think. I am someone who knows nothing about the movie production process and is not in any way qualified to tell you if a movie is good or not. If nothing else, I am someone who enjoys watching movies and thought that I might organize my thoughts in one place.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)

Most of us have seen the classics. The Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Kane, it’s not often that a movie is released that will be remembered for as a masterpiece of film making. However, on February 27, 2010 everything changed with a movie that is, quite possibly, the worst movie ever made. No, I’m not kidding. This movie is the most broken, horrible, story-less, garbage I have ever seen. The acting was a nightmare, the production design non-existent, and the writing abysmal. I don’t know how over 50 people got together and said, “Hey, making this movie is a good idea and something we should invest time and money into.” I can’t emphasize enough how bad this movie is. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and see just why this movie is the worst thing ever.

Look at that image above. Look at it. That is an unedited scene from the movie. This is the level of professionalism that we are dealing with here. Never mind that, let’s talk about the actual content of the movie. Starting off, there is 3 and a half minutes credits which leads into about 30 minutes of going through the main character’s day (played by Alan Bagh). Really. Its just this guys day, nothing more. He goes to a restaurant, goes to the gas station, and goes to work. Nothing interesting, nothing excited, just a guy going through his day. Oh, and did I mention that he is the worst actor of all time. I honestly think if they had cast anyone else, ANYONE, it would’ve been a better movie. He is just the worst thing ever. Then once the birds show up, it doesn’t get any better. They couldn’t have done a worse job with the CGI birds. I won’t give anymore away because, despite it being disgustingly bad, I think that you should watch it.

Yes, that’s right, you should watch this movie. This horrible excuse for a movie is one that you should see. Something about this trash makes it lovable in its own twisted way. By the end of the movie you have fallen in love with this atrocity. I honestly think that everyone who can, should watch this movie. James Nguyen has created his own kind of classic movie. A movie that is so bad, that it will be remembered for a long time.

Michael Bay and the Never Ending Sequel

Some people have asked me questions lately in reference to my first post  in which I stated that I was disappointed at the amount of sequels that there were upcoming in 2014. Now, first off, I don’t hate all sequels. I dislike most of them however, for being uncreative cash-ins on the the earlier movie’s success. Directors and producers see a successful movie as an opportunity to make a quick buck on a sequel. Sequels, in my opinion, limit creativity and when you have a group of directors that are focused on making sub-par sequels to their previously successful films, we are missing out on the opportunity for new fantastic films. Just take a look at the upcoming summer movie season. There are a lot of big budget sequels coming out, but less brand new titles. It’s a bit of a let down. However, not all sequels are bad news. Some sequels are necessary to finish the story that they started in the first film. The overarching story is too long and too complex to be limited by one movie (i.e. Lord of the Rings). Some directors are more at fault for making unnecessary sequels than others. So we will look at a man who needs no introduction, Michael Bay.

Michael Bay is a Wesleyan University graduate who starting his directing career by directing music videos for several artists such Meatloaf, Tina Turner, and Lionel Richie. After receiving several awards from MTV for some of his music videos, he turned his attention to the big screen.  Some of his earlier films included the Rock, and Bad Boys, the later which incidentally has one sequel already out and another which may or may not be on the way. It was on July 3, 2007 when the first of the many Transformers movies was released. The thing about this first movie, is that it wasn’t all that bad. It was nominated for 3 Oscars and many other awards for its special effects and sound design. Granted Shia LaBeouf isn’t exactly the best actor in the world, it didn’t take away from a somewhat satisfying action movie. However, things got worse from there. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon were bad, unnecessary, and ruined what they started. The first film gave many Transformers fans what they wanted, an action-packed Transformers movie that did the franchise justice. The next two however, were terrible cash-ins by Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures. Movies like these Transformers movies are the reasons why I am unhappy to see more and more sequels being released every year. Good movies that become tarnished by some garbage sequels. Please, please, please let 2015 bring something new to the table, other than the same crap we have seen over and over again.

Shutter Island (2010)

Shutter Island is a 2010 psychological thriller film directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Casino). It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the war-hardened US Marshall, Edward Daniels, who is brought to Shutter Island (an island in Boston Harbor that is one big mental asylum for the criminally insane) in 1954 to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients in. Daniels and his partner, Chuck Aule (played by Mark Ruffalo), arrive at the island to an uneasy staff, and a mysterious head psychiatrist (Ben Kingsley). Then the story progresses as the duo search the island and discover more about the island’s secrets in their search for the missing patient. It ends with one of the best twists in all of film and really makes the viewer question everything that happens in the movie. This film has split the film community, critics and fans alike. I personally think that Scorsese has outdone himself once again with yet another fantastic film.

Let’s start off with the movie’s strong point, the plot. This film was adapted from the 2003 novel by the same name written by Dennis Lehane. It really has a complex plot that requires you to follow along closely in all of the dialogue sequences for you to really understand what’s going on. The thing that makes this movie so fantastic is that is makes you think. By the time the credits rolled there was so much to take in and try to interpret, as the ending of the film will blow you away. Anyone who tells you that they say the ending coming is a liar. Now onto the acting. DiCaprio gives an excellent performance, as usual, and all of the supporting actors and actresses give fantastic performances. It was filmed almost entirely in Massachusetts, giving it that authentic New England feel to the locations of the film. The only complaint I have for the movie is the choppy camera cutting. In some scenes it gets a little disorienting, Other than that this is a flawless film.

I give this movie a 9/10. Nearly everything in this movie was perfect. It can’t be emphasized enough that this movie has one of the best plots of any movie I have ever seen. The plot is as complicated and thought-provoking as it is emotional and tear-jerking. This is a movie to watch without any distractions, as missing something in this plot can ruin the ending for you. I urge anyone and everyone to see this movie. A word of caution, the movie is very violent and can be incredibly disturbing in some scenes. Anyone who can’t handle violence well should probably not watch this movie as it shows plenty of gore and the mentally disturbed patients may be unsettling to some. If you can get past this part then this movie is a must see!

2014 Upcoming Movies: Sequels, Remakes, and More

2013 was certainly a year to remember in the movie industry. During the year, theaters across the globe were graced with modern masterpieces such as 12 Years a Slave and Gravity. Both of these films were leaps and bounds forwards for the movie industry in terms of artistic storytelling and cinematography, respectively. However 2013 has come and gone and the 86th Oscars have ended. Now we are 4 months into 2014 and have already been greeted into the new year by a slew of films that are worth talking about and with plenty more films on the way, we have much to discuss.

January held nothing of much importance. The films that were released during the month were sub-par at best. The Nut Job and Devil’s Due being some of the worst films, while Her standing tall among a sea of terrible, terrible movies. February had some decent films, such as The LEGO Movie which definitely came as a surprise, and Robocop. Robocop did not meet the fantastic critic reviews that Her and The LEGO Movie received, but honestly was not that bad of a movie. It had a decent, straight-forward plot and good character development. The action scenes were okay as well. Robocop was probably the most underrated film of the month. March leads us into a wave of mediocrity featuring 300: Rise of an Empire, Need for Speed, and Divergent. The only redeeming film seems to be Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is Anderson’s first film to every gross over $100 Million at the Box Office, and rightfully so. Coming up is a summer and winter movie seasons which are sure to be host to all sorts of both masterpieces and atrocities alike.

Welcome to the rest of 2014. Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Lucy, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and The Expendables 3. There is so much to be excited for! One thing to notice however is that all of these movies, save for Lucy, are (akin to the title of this post) are either a sequel or a remake. This is a little disappointing, but nevertheless no reason to not be excited. Hopefully in 2015 directors will be more willing to break away from that cycle. Michael Bays somewhat unwanted return to the Transformers franchise has warranted much discussion form the fans of how to not repeat the mistakes of the previous films. So far the Godzilla trailers have made me very hopeful for a real, high-quality Godzilla remake. (1998 never happened). Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman star in the film Lucy, which looks definitely like a must see film. 2014 is a year filled with upcoming movies that are worth going to see and I patiently await the release date for all of these in hopes that 2014 will be a year to remember.
